I feel sorry for today’s young people and am glad I do not have any; really never wanted because I noticed the onslaught of too many “mistakes” running around doing stupid things decades ago and even more, these days.

Take for example, the latest lunacy in the following story from earlier this week.

Recent generations’ obsession with posting dumb stuff on Facebook and Instagram sinks to a new low when an older sister crashes the car she, her sister and friend are joyriding in and all she can think to do is narrate it via livestream into the camera phone and post on Instagram instead of trying to get help or help save her dying sibling’s life or soothe her injuries. It is egocdentric madness begat by the scurge of reality TV!
Where are the parents who should have taught prioities at the dinner table to this little hussie?

In a statement they said, via her Public Defender Samrao, “They want her to come home, they’re not mad at her. They don’t blame her.” What? ‘Sounds like some errant political correctspeech. They also said, “she needs help.” No sh** Sherlock! That is what your job is dummy! Where were you and your wife all of her life? Smokin’ weed?? They should also serve prison time as accessories, IMO. To add insult to deathly injury the girl, Ms. Sanchez, had a prior reckless driving case as a juvenile. Nope, $560,000 bail not be reduced. She gloated and accepted “responsibility” on-camera, in a classic case of “no home training” and of course, “cried in court”. Tragic situation, yes and they can be avoided with educational prevention.

This lack of common sense is an epidemic. I have lost count of the times that I have heard about these young criminals posting their crimes on Facebook AS IF they don’t think that the Cops are checking there.

Some of my fellow Baby Boomer friends have a point when they refuse to use Facebook and other Social Media due to their belief that it is ‘a way for the CIAs of the country to “Big Brother” us orwellian-style’!
I say that the inventor of the camera and Alexander Graham Bell, of the telephone, would think it a priviledge and special talent to be a photographer and that everybody should not own a camera as now comes fashionably standard with a telephone!

Nyet, this young lady and those like her who post devious acts on Facebook and other social media have life totally backasswards and nobody is taking to school on it. News media report but do not teach why it is a wrong thing to have done because negativity (in their minds) sells sponsor’s products.
When will those to captain our social mores learn? Oh, that might take real old-fashioned education and pro-active punishment of our youth – heaven forbit that!

For example the leaders of Facebook, Instagram and Livestream could take ownership of this teaching moment AND perform a public service by disclaiming and cautioning these young, “cable-ready” generations NOT to share criminal acts under penalty of the cancillation of their accounts immediately!

No matter what the prision time Sanchez ultimately gets, she sentenced herself to lifetime of guilty feelings – if she has that much sense.

Let Achilliad know what you think about this kind of activity in “Comments”.

Kissing a Kia was a nice ride,
A Pelvic glide;
Not a fender-bender no.
I drove a Pontiac at that time;
Then a Mustang.
She once wore horizontal back and white stripes,
We would make out sometime in my car.

Kissing Kia;
So how did that start?
Must have been those copious love letters,
Which I still find when looking for something else;
She penned them while in her high school classes.
Giving her a lift home,
Keeping her border secret
Impressed by my loyalty I guess,
Similarly needing a true friend was I,
She was not a drive-by.

Kissing Kia,
Coming, or better put,
Stopping-by my Counselor office,
Pulling me near in an embrace,
Very sexy she and I couldn’t avoid that face.
Well put-together by the love God Venus,
Body belied her age or another from the assembly line;
It was all I could muster not to think with my penis.

Kissing Kia,
How I wanted to hook-up,
Yet I couldn’t as I was thirty-something
While like the old Sam Cooke Song,
“She Was Only Sixteen…”
Only half of those lyrics applied;
She was one smart cookie,
An intelligent older man drawn
While unsung will sensibly realize.

Kissing Kia was not fake.
Had she bragged to a friend however,
Would have been a Daily News headline cover,
I did not want to make.
Though her tender, well-built body
I yearned to take.

Kissing Kia drove to express her desires,
In no uncertain terms;
More mature than many ladies my own age,
And those guys of her generation;
Her flirtation taught me an important unknown page.
Why so blessed was I with this decision test?

Kissing Kia,
Upon a time of the whip-appeal era,
She is still Babyface alright with me.
A Kia with an Optima Sportage Soul,
French-kissingly Nero Forte,
Mashina I would still love to drive.

Kissing Kia
During period change in my office,
All the way lovingly Kool;
Love you you fool!
Wanted to mount that vernon.

Kissing Kia
As years pass,
Both much older.
Never forgetting those boobs nor that tight ass;
Our Fantasy Island unfulfilled.
Yet so long as we live,
None but us know which embers of
Burning passion lasts.

As Barbara Streisand and the late Donna Summer (I still cannot believe Donna died so soon…) sang back in 1979, “Enough is Enough“ with these losses, but somehow, I do not think they will end with the conclusion of 2016. 1859

OMG! What a tragic year for us who have lived via our stars like Prince, Glenn Frey, David Bowie and many more!! Is it our supernatural Baby Boomer karma catching up to us? All of this reinforces my reckoning with our human mortality. And you?

At the rate that our musical stars are dying I might be next!lol Even though I was only a Dee Jay on the radio, who played their hits!
I have experienced many strange events by being part of the media. For example, I was working the board on The Zone, 104.5FM, which was only one hundred yards away from the scene where the NFL’s Tennessee Titan’s legendary quarterback, Steve McNair was murdered by his extramarital lover. I digress; this article is about 2016!
Can we dig deeper into this? Is there a conspiracy about that is suddenly taking away American icons rapidly via some diabolical plan? Is it “ISIS”-related? Most likely, Nyet.

On the heels of learning about Colonel Abrams from the list I link later in this blog, I peruse it again, in order to do a possible year-end summary of the many important stars and musicians we lost this year, when I come across the name, “David Mancuso”. I’d skimmed this list many times during the past week and saw his name only this evening now, over a drink, while at a lonely, hidden bar in a southern town. This trend may well continue into 2017! I hope not…

I remember the shiny cobblestoned streets, often moistened by a recent rain as I, the still a bit shy, baby DJ, freshly graduated from Adelphi University, crossed to visit him at 99 Prince Street, the home of David Mancuso and the first Record Pool I ever belonged to which was responsible for many of the vinyl 12” DJ versions I own. Sometimes I left with just a couple big, album-sized envelopes and other times, I could hardly walk to the subway station, if I hadn’t driven there, parking several blocks away as parking was difficult in that part of “the Village” in Manhattan, New York.

David was kind of “scary” to the 1970s me. Not in the mean sense of the word, but just the kind of fun, strange cat that I would likely become! He briefly would chill with me, imparting heavy conversation sometimes [I didn’t always understand, but pretended to] and schooled me about stuff that I had no idea about though I now still relate to as “an old Black American Hippie”, which is, at my core, who I am! Many other Baby Boomers are similar to me, but will not admit it because of the un-corporate connotation of “Hippie”. I say “f-ck that!” Be who you are (another famous, educational song lyric!). David would agree. I wish I was him sometimes now!

David Mancuso was mysterious to me. I remember always wanting to smoke a joint with him! Ha! Maybe we did once, or I smelled it while copping my sides. “I can’t remember”, lol Those were the daze. How I came to find him, I cannot really recall. It must have been via one of my major record company Promotional contacts, my own research, Billboard magazine, or word-of-mouth via other DJs…I apologize for being so vague about this, which I am usually so succinct – at the time of this writing, but I do not have all of my belongings with me to research into my past, as it used to be when I began to blog. ‘Working on changing that asap! I always left there feeling part of the greater DJ game! I knew I was a real “player” and party motivator! All of that started, by the way, in my senior year at the now defunct, Andrew Jackson High School in Cambria Heights, Queens, New York City and going forward from there (as was mandatory in those great days) as an undergraduate DJ on the campus of Adelphi University in Garden City, Nassau County on Long Island.
This is as close to the David Mancuso that I remember:

davieproph

And as I write this, I receive the news that naughty, inner-conflicted “Wham” boy Gorge Michael died over Christmas weekend. He cheated death many times as attested to here:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/rob-sheffield-on-why-george-michael-was-a-true-pop-visionary-w457788

Again, this is a summary inspired by the passing of my 99 Prince Street Record Pool Founder, David Mancuso; yet another “nail in our collective coffin” during twenty-sixteen. Is there a larger message that we should be hearing behind these passings? I think so!
To encompass all of the disappointing hurt in words of this year’s losses is difficult. And again, as I write this, the news of Carrie Fisher of “Star Wars” (the original) fame now passing-away at only the age of sixty (60)! WTF?? 160421142237-people-we-lost-april-2016-medium-plus-169

How did the passing of Gene Wilder, Prince, Craig Sager, Ron Glass, Alan Thicke, Maurice White, George Kennedy, Patty Duke, Merle Haggard, Pearl Washington, Billy Paul, Muhammad Ali, Morley Safer, Bobby Hutcherson, Hugh O’Brian, Bobby Vee, Gwen Ifill, Clarence Reid or Florence Henderson and others you can view on the link below, impact you this year? We all have our “heroes”, right? There is no shame in claiming them.

http://www.syracuse.com/celebrity-news/index.ssf/2016/01/celebrity_deaths_in_2016_famous_photos.html

Please share in the “Comments” area in remembrance…of them. I pray upon the souls of all these giants we’ve lost and that some of what I have written in hommage has educated you and made sense.

**PickHitt: and just as I clicked “Publish”, the news of another beloved of my lifetime and mother of Carrie Fisher (I didn’t KNOW that!), Debbie Reynolds joined the parade of 2016 stars leaving the physical world. “Wow”…again.

History is the most important subject your children must learn and study. Don’t think so? Well pay attention to what is happening right under our noses these days…

There was a time, not so long ago, that when a group exercised its agenda upon the innocents with explosives or gunfire, it was just that: a “bombing” or “shooting”. Shit, when I was coming of teenage, the civil rights movement in American begat any number of groups from the so-called “left” who would, when they felt they were being ignored, would blow up the establishment’s shit on the regular! Ever heard of the Weather Underground (“Weathermen”), Symbionese Liberation Army (world famous for the kidnapping of publishing heiress, Patricia Hearst in 1974), Black Panthers, Puerto Rican F.A.L.N, the Unabomber, the Oklahoma City duo and others?

Now and since the cowardly declaration of war attack by Osama Bin Ladin et al, on September 11, 2001, any act of stupidity by a mentally ill person who kills innocents is labeled “terrorism” by the news media. But is it really? The then American President Bush re-coined the phrase, I believe, and that vernacular should change in-order to improve our understanding within the discourse.

Can we not revert back to when we had different terminology for assorted barbaric behaviors? Every nut with a gun is not a terrorist. More than likely, it is a “copy-cat” mentally deranged person who, because of current technology, that allows one to perpetually view negativity on television, who decides to act-out their perceived bullshit violent psychosis which drives them insane in a similar manner!

OKC_Video-300x231

This same American news “cycle” has, in a backdoor way, encouraged these crazies to act-out not only here but in place like Nice, France. Who says that petty thief truck driver is a “terrorist” but not just a NUT-JOB who should have been institutionalized and on medications? We will never know because now, due to the perception that the every violent character is a “terrorist” mentality which has filtered from government into law enforcement, and now the police shoot (or blow-up, as in Dallas, Texas recently) to kill instead of wound, therefore we collectively lose access to psychoanalyze the individual’s deep, true intentions and what really inspired them. I would bet good money that their acts are not borne so simply out of just religious hate.
It is time to pull-back from the brink of religious-borne anarchy and/or [in the USA] race wars now. They are killing instead of capturing.

You will notice, if you read the subtitles or pure audio in the video below, from shortly after the 9/11 event, the coward Bin Laden himself, uses the word “terrorist”. For American news media and the President to copy his words and perpetuate them into the syntax to this day in 2016, is a damn shame and News Directors’ heads should roll. The English language has so many other adjectives to describe and simultaneously educate the populace than the fodder they have been using from the enemy, which is dividing the country and world.

Every bombing act is not an “Isis” event these days, just as back in the 1970s, during the black American Civil Rights movement, my friend, Imhotep Gary Byrd said, “Every Brother Ain’t A “Brother”…

C’mon, People! Do your homework! Teach your children well and to study HISTORY – so that the mistakes of the past are not made again! Our “leaders” in the USA have let the modern “Trojan Horse” enter our sphere. We, the People, cannot be “terrorized” unless we are in fear! Media know that spreading the fear of “terrorism” sells products.

As we again commemorate the only true Black American (descendants of slaves) Holiday in America, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Day here on January 18, 2016, I think it timely to resurrect the late musical genius of Curtis Mayfield, who would want to point-out his words to this latest generation of look-a-like black immigrants who did not get the message that we already fought and WON this battle. “Black Lives Matter” is taking the USA back in time to where we were. DO you homework, stay in school till you get a University degree and behave yourselves, you new, Caribbean and African can brown-skinned peoples! Dr. King’s real birthday was January 15, 1929, by the way. Another famous Capricorn leader like Muhammad Ali and even Confederate General Robert E. Lee!

We people who are darker than blue
Are we gonna stand around this town
And let what others say come true?
We’re just good for nothing they all figure

A boyish, grown up, shiftless jigger
Now we can’t hardly stand for that
Or is that really where it’s at?
We people who are darker than blue

This ain’t no time for segregatin’
I’m talking ’bout brown and yellow two
High yellow girl, can’t you tell
You’re just the surface of our dark deep well

If your mind could really see
You’d know your color the same as me
Pardon me, brother, as you stand in your glory
I know you won’t mind if I tell the whole story

Get yourself together, learn to know your side
Shall we commit our own genocide
Before you check out your mind?

I know we’ve all got problems
That’s why I’m here to say
Keep peace with me and I with you
Let me love in my own way

Now I know we have great respect
For the sister, and mother it’s even better yet
But there’s the joker in the street

Loving one brother and killing the other
When the time comes and we are really free
There’ll be no brothers left you see

We people who are darker than blue
Don’t let us hang around this town
And let what others say come true

We’re just good for nothing they all figure
A boyish, grown up, shiftless jigger
Now we can’t hardly stand for that
Or is that really where it’s at?

Pardon me, brother, while you stand in your glory
I know you won’t mind if I tell the whole story
Pardon me, brother, I know we’ve come a long, long way
But let us not be so satisfied for tomorrow can be an
An even brighter day

All HUMAN lives DO matter in the physical world; we must embrace the heavy lifting – without violence, as the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King did – in order to live together. Are you up to being smart instead of ignorant due lack of extensive historical education? The lives who are traditionally celebrated the most are the ones who uphold the standards of manners, respect for authority, etiquette, follow the simplest of rules in society and embrace peace. Maybe choose a different slogan? I liked “Power To The People” from the 1060s and 1970s…

Finally, I’ve noticed that too many people I talk to business-to-business do not know Monday is a Federal Holiday! This is troubling on many levels as too many businesses choose to ignore it and conduct business as-usual – some spitefully (see “Red” states). Doing this undermines the fact that President Reagan signed it into law in 1983 after it ran the gauntlet of the U.S. Congress. If you have a sales business, why aren’t there “King Birthday” sales, for example? Jus’ sayin’…

…And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty, we’re free at last!”

THAT is what my Pops told me when I was around ten years old – and it stuck in my mind. UNfortunately, in today’s post “9/11” world in the USA, it is much easier for  today’s “Da Man” to find reasons to mess with young “minority” men – or any of us.  In New York City, the police force seems more like an Army occupying within civilian spaces, ready to pounce.

I want to close my ears to this revisionist history, OMG!

ONE major aspect behind the cause of these recent Baltimore riots in the wake of another so-called Afro-Caribbean American male death in custody after an arrest, is the chickens coming home to roost upon the failed model of the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and others like Hillary and former President Bill Clinton, who empowered the Child Support State of disengaging and criminalizing thousands of American  men while they took away the stigma of illegitimate, out of wedlock child bearing while encouraging women to raise boys without the benefit of stable and enduring marriage and a father in the house.  You cannot legislate family togetherness via an uneven playing field that punishes one sex for what is the act of both sexes together!  Without a father to command respect at the dinner table, the lessons of the 1968 riots after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in cities like Newark, New Jersey and Detroit (which never recovered from them), Baltimore and other big towns across the United States were never passed-down to sons. Therefore, we see them repeating the mistakes of that past and tragically, sadly fucking-up their own “hood”.  It is obvious to me that those throwing rocks and disrespecting their police force spent too little time in class learning about our collective past in this country.  Someone should school them as to the untimeliness of their tantrum – the beginning of tourist season.  They cut their own summer job prospects visa v tourism to the Inner Harbor area and more. Dumb asses.  It is time to have less “Child Protective Servces” intrusion and more traditional family values and empowerment of two-parent families – if it isn’t too late thanks to the political correctness police and politicians. I can hear the white people who used to live there in Baltimore County saying, “Its a damn shame. See what happens when you let a city get run by the Niggras [or whatever they call Blacks nowadays]?….Damn shame….Uh, Uh, Uh….”

Why have we re-segregated ourselves? The aim of the 1960s American Civil Rights movement was integration ! On this Baltimore, Maryland map below, blacks are to the west, or left and multiculturalness is to the east, or right.

balt

By-the-way, How come white people don’t riot if a white criminal youth is shot by a non-white cop? To me it soo passe` to do it.

**Pickhit: I am troubled by an account that says Freddie Gray asked for an INHALER while in police custody. As an occasional Asthma suffrer, I can relate personally. Law inforcement would rather believe you had an illegal substance than a real congenital affliction even if you cry-out for it that you had in your possession when shit went down!

All of these “protest” rallies agains police are tiresome and misguided IMO (in my opinion).  Maybe it is because I hae lived through the “real deal” of this struggle forty years ago and the outcome was that Black Americans finally “overcame” segregation in the USA.  Then, the Moynahans and Reagans, upon flawed stereotypical thinking, broke the family unit of those who could least afford to resopnd; no one passed-down the message that my and my parents generation built, even though the population elected a brown-skinned President.  It is very telling that this happens on Obama’s watch – he has done little to uplift the image of Black American (like me) and African-Caribbean males during his two terms, unfortunately.
Below is a video of a mother who deserves major props and I hope the “child protective services PC police” do not go after her for doing the right and necessary thing. A father/husband should have been on-camera as well.

Of course “Black Lives Matter”, it is 2015, not 1965 and everybody knows it. My advice is to revise, revisit and repeal those Moynihan “Family First” laws and begin to reunite all families in America again. Your thoughts?

17-starbucks-race-together-2.w529.h529.2xRecently, Starbucks unsuccessfully launched this “unity” campaign.  They just slapped a slogan on their coffee cups without a lead-up promotion and there should have been a brown hand under this cup (at least, or several shades) – in my opinion – that is why it failed.  Today’s media must be captained by fools who did not do their homework visa v ethnic relations in the United States over the past century-plus.  It is why, even though I held-back, I am compelled to post this… Back in 2008, I met my first Slavic woman girlfriend, who convinced me that watching television was largely a waste of valuable time – especially the “news” and sports. I bought into her mentality and ended up spending much more quality time with her, much to my delight and relaxation – and she liked it also.  Unfortunately, she had two young sons via two different men; widely separated in age to raise and that, along with her, cranky insecurities, and  suffering from panic attacks (something I had never heard of at the time) which caused her to take many undesclosed -to-me pills, soon put the kibosh on our relationship (her decision) after nary a bit over one year. I digress only to say, she had a POINT about watching the ratings-game known as the “news”; truly I’d wasted too many hours watching millionaire athletes do their thing at the expense of me pursuing my goals and dreams. Her cautions have stayed with me! Unfortunately, the general populace of the USA did not receive the same memo, and it speaks directly to the overkill that today’s news directors now give to stories of a racially dividing bent, which capitalize (for ratings, IMO) on reigniting the recently-dowsed embers of racial hate in continental USA.  Having daily hosts on the airwaves such as Bill O’Reilly, Al Sharpton, and of course the legendary, Rush Limbaugh does not help matters of cultural ethnic manners and build unity either.  They only propagate hate instead of educate good news!  Why do there have to be “Red” and “Blue” states on the Election Day maps – or even the Weather Channel maps?  ‘Still fighting the Civil War, eh?  Very tragic. As for today’s children, not raised by two parents, who imitate the “news”: Do not cover and promote young chicks wanting to “join Isis”!  By doing so, you are helping Isis recruit! Don’t you News Directors understand and see this? Witness how terrestrial radio of today plays new, “cover” versions of past classic hits without the announcers back-selling the origins of the songs in-order to educate within the entertainment as people like the late Frankie Crocker, Vaughn Harper and those of us privileged to perform along side them did.  Who wrote and performed it first? Under what circumstances?  News and music media should return to making the “tease” incite these successive generations to want to learn their history of our collective past! tumblr_njzfc95MRe1r83d7lo1_1280 Rap/Hip-Hop music also must clean its act up (if it can without losing the very identity it has embraced in recent decades since 1999) and de-emphasize weapon violence in their lyrics and performances. They reinforce negative male stereotypes that we once had quashed! The whole Third World is here in many cities of the USA now. They only look the same as we Black Americans of the civil rights days of the 1960s and 1970s skin-deep. These are different “Blacks” – they are “Afro-Caribbean-Americans” who look a wee bit like black Americans – but I can tell the difference without them saying a word.  Islanders have more Neanderthal, simian cheek-boneed features and lips. They also do not have the same playbook nor history as we Black Americans who are descendants of American slavery and they look down/talk disparagingly about us!  Imagine that!? I heard an African guy on his phone, sitting only a foot away from me at my bank do this very recently! They shunned our history and take advantage of the gains, pain and achievements we endured only to arrive in the wake of our victories to miscegenate among us and further confuse the European Caucasian base that the United States Of America was founded upon. The generation of “lookalike” black people who came to the USA beginning in the 1980s are so late to the party and were labeled as  “African Americans” via the Clinton Presidency and the silly advent of “political correctness”  that we Black American men, who did the heavy lifting of the movement which ultimately resulted in the success of “we Shall over come”, decades ago of, but nobody apparently passed the memo on to them, and these crop of coconuts, IMO. The feminists and queers also have ridden upon our coattails, as if the perceived discrimination is similar – not. It is also time to end this enabling of children who can run to a social services agency or the cops after they get a needed parental disciplined spanking!  This action was unheard of during my generation or the many prior generations. We could not go running to some outside of the family “agency” and say, “Oh my Daddy spanked me! Please put them in jail!”  Bullshit. Everything was kept in-house – and we should return the same power to the parents asap!  A spanking or two growing is not “abuse”!  We are all born as  little animals that need training – some tough physically judicial parental love, that is – in our formative years. I use former NBA Hall Of Famer, Charles Barkley’s video on part of this topic because it is in-line with the fact that most of my generation’s parents migrated from “the south” (southern USA states where slavery emanated from). Finally, these discipleship ideas also apply the offspring American Caucasian clans in the USA, who have embraced the “thug” lifestyle. “Ya heard??”

Back to Starbucks, as I commented on a piece about the attempted campaign on LinkedIn.com, I would have built advance promotion and publicity about this idea long before slapping “Race Together” on the coffee cups and in a different manor using more medias, for one thing…In the USA we are still the victim of the negative messages about race that our own news Directors, channels and parts of the music entertainment industry reinforce and advertise (for ratings, IMO) ad-nausea. This must change for us to catch-up to the rest of the world.” As my acquaintance from Belarus would say, “C’MON, People!” ~~  your comments, solutions and suggestions are welcomed, as alwaze here.

???????????????????????????????

Early this first week of November, 2014, I received this email from a Realtor friend,
“In Case you didn’t know: Mayor Bill de Blasio signed legislation that will lower the default speed limit in New York City from 30 to 25 miles per hour. Beginning November 7th 2014, the speed limit on all streets will be 25 mph, unless otherwise posted. http://www.nyc.gov/html/visionzero/pages/home/home.html”

My reaction is that it is one of the DUMBEST laws in history, if you take into account that this is “fast-paced New York City”. And yet I understand the “spirit” of the edict must be to slow-down the plethora of wild drivers overall. I learned to drive in NYC and earned my license in 1969.

The succeeding generations after the 1990s have pushed anarchy on the roads to a new HIGH, so I understand the “spirit” of what the Mayor is signing.
Heh, maybe they will let us do “30”mph without a ticket. However, it is also possible that some overly- aggressive NYPD will undoubtedly catch many dolphins in their traffic dragnets. ???????????????????????????????

Instead I suggest a “Stop Sign Means a FULL STOP” campaign. The Mayor could hire me (or not) to do the Public Service Announcements voice-over for radio and TV!! I say that because this generation of drivers (many from other parts of the planet) has NO respect for the Stop Sign. stop-war-sign

My dad owned the now defunct “Jamaica Auto School” back in the day, so I KNOW from what I speak for he who cannot speak anymore.
My concern is that those of us who follow the rules, who are from the black and white TV/beginning of color TV generations and those immediately after will become the dolphins caught in the NYPD’s traffic dragnet. Those of us who know the old rules of “right-of-way” and “no trucks in the left lane”, who speed-up to pass grandpappy who is DWTOT (driving while too old to) will get surprise camera speeding tickets or worse, stopped by today’s uniformed NYPD human lookalikes who then, in the spirit of former Mayor Giuliani take the opportunity to humiliate good, mature adult citizens in the name of reclaiming “stop and frisk” under the guise of exceeding the 25mph limit.

How about ticketing pedestrians who cannot look up from their “stupid phones” and wander out into oncoming traffic?! Or the ones with headphones on under hoodies who wander out in the crosswalk of major borough boulevards at dusk, not looking right or left as I was taught to, almost with impunity that a vehicle will not strike them down them down just because they did not SEE them until the last second as the driver made their left-turn! One of the lessons my Pops taught me while we walked from the subway on Lexington Avenue up to my boyhood “guppie” YMCA swimming lessons was to “look both ways and over your right shoulder for cars, and NEVER trust that the driver would stop!” In other words, never put your life in the hands of a driver whose state of mind you do not KNOW! Mr. DeBlasio, do your homework and go BACK to those lessons if you want to reduce pedestrian incidents and fatalities!

No, this policy is not thoroughly thought-out and will likely produce traffic court gridlock before long, if there are enough of us who know to challenge wrongs in the system still left in the once-great fast-paced “Big Apple” to stand-up against it.

Not that I never drove the streets of NYC aggressively, mind you, but it was always a “controlled assertion”; more like to get out of the way of what I saw developing. Sometimes someone driving too slowly is as bad as one driving too fast! I’ve witnessed these new drivers, in their modern, high-powered Lexus, Camarys, and BMWs (“OMG, the aggressively ignorant attitude that beamer drivers have these days in NYC is moronically morose!) who drive like they think that those drivers in the movies and in car sales commercials on controlled tracks are the way you are supposed to drive around the neighborhood!

And so once again, in true kindergarten or grade school fashion, like when someone stole the teacher’s favorite pen from her desk and would not own-up to it nor accept amnesty as she turned her back to “allow whoever it was to return it”, most of the class of experienced and predominate traffic law-abiding drivers will be punished for the actions of a band of youthful and immature few.
25mph everywhere? Nyet. Drivers over forty years old, please coach yourselves up on how to dispute camera speeding tickets, quickly, fast and in-a-hurry. Look out for more “road rage” stories, lol.

**PickHit: “Pedestrian deaths in the city fell to a historic low last year, and motorcyclist deaths also dropped, the number of bicyclist fatalities increased to 20, from 12 in 2013″!

** Sureshot: Having to watch-out for speeding cameras (“photo enforced”) adds another driver DISTRACTION, you dummies!

type keys

A co-worker recently commented to me, “Hey man you type fast!” lol I thought and replied, “My Keyboarding class teacher would be happy to heart that!” Then I thought, how far this “hunt and pecker” has traveled with the advent of the PC and now laptop devices…I even can sms pretty good with my too-big fingers for the android.

My seventh or eighth grade keyboarding teacher would be proud to hear this news! So would my father, as much as he berated me for not catching-on quickly to type without looking at my fingers! It was circa 1969 for me…Do you remember your typewriter keyboarding teacher? When I had it she used a ruler to whack our hands into a tighter, faster and possibly more accurate application to the alphabetical keys.
The explosion of computers was not envisioned by our piano, typing or keyboarding instructors – or was it? I investigate to give you succinct history, meanwhile, from personal experience, it was more about being able to type a term paper fast and accurately, or getting a secretarial “receptionist” gig at about the time that men were being accepted as such.
I wish that I had been able to save at least ONE of the several classic typewriters that passed through my writng fingers!

At least a novelty or conversation piece, I could still, provided I can find a “ribbon” for it, create written content, use “carbon paper” to make a copy of it while imagining practicing what our typing teacher mandated using that huge homework book that we were assigned to copy our tediously repetitive lessons from. woman-typing-007

At the end of the day, my colleague was correct! I do type faster! lol With props to the old maiden typewritng teacher, my bothersom father who perpetuated pecking proliferation punctuatiting precisely (more importantly) practicing without knowing with growing proficiency by dint of the personal computer, et al which increased the good ole “wpm” (“words- per-minute” for you clueless youngnz) which are not that important anymore, I suppose, unless you apply for a gig which requires a typing test, a la “secretary” or whatever the modern term for that individual is these days. I am SURE that it is taught differently.

marketing manager

Six months ago, the owner of the company that I work for promoted me to “Head of “ [my department].  I am the Manager of call center Appointment Setters – marketing sales. I was and am grateful for the faith he put in me. However, you will not believe the kinds of common sense transgressions I have seen in such a short of a time!  One of the main ones is that several people that I hired – a few of whom were thrust upon me by others in the company who had our boss’s ear for the moment – thought that they could not show up for work, not call-in and then show up two days later and think that they still had a job!!  It is amazing, and speaks sadly to the apparent lowered standards of both the home family unit and our basic education system!

Upon that backdrop, I present for those of you who have been Managers of people and you who aspire to become same, the following quick list of tips:

1 -When you conclude an interview, always ask for references to the previous employers listed on a candidate’s resume.  If those references are not emailed to you in the next 24 hours, the candidate is not serious or has fudged their CV. In any event, it is a sure sign that they cannot follow a simple request, do not want the job badly enough to make you look good as a hiring manager and will likely become a headache if hired.

2 – Praise publicly, criticize constructively, privately

3 – Motivate and always thank your “troops” at the end of each day for their efforts.

4 – Make sure that your business owner backs your decisions and policies.  whip
They trusted you to “Head” the department, so you do not want employees under your management to feel that they can go over your head when something you say, they do not like or want to follow. The last thing you want to happen is you asked to terminate someone for insubordination, only to have that individual hired back into another department at the same company (which I had to experience, btw).

5 – Learn to listen and not react when those under your charge discuss work-related issues amongst themselves in your presence.  Unless they directly ask you to intervene, let them work things out and become closer without your micromanagement.

6 – Set a good example.  Do not ask employees to do what you would not do yourself.  Whether it is not eating lunch at your workstation or not leaving sales voice-mails.  Ask not your employees to do what you do not do yourself!

Being a Manager is not all it is cracked-up to be.  It is especially acute if you are only a manger in name without a significant increase in pay.  Therefore,

manager

7 – Never accept more responsibility for others without a substantial pay raise, in-writing.  Otherwise, the headaches that come along with increased pressure upon your shoulders just ain’t worth it.
